New Spaces for Research, Athletics, Housing to Enhance UMD’s Campus Footprint

With Purple Line construction dominating the landscape at UMD these days, it’s easy to miss some of the bricks-and-mortar projects on the campus horizon: new research buildings, upgraded classrooms, long-hoped-for graduate housing and stunning athletics facilities are among nine projects to look for on your next trek to work or class:

Chemistry Wing 1Crews added glass and brick this summer to complete the exterior of the 105,000-square-foot Wing 1, which will feature 34 labs and 13 meeting rooms, among many other spaces. This semester, they’ll put the finishing touches on the building’s interior; the dedication is planned for the spring.

Stanley R. Zupnik HallMajor utility work began this summer in preparation for a new interdisciplinary building for the A. James Clark School of Engineering. Kitty-corner from the E.A. Fernandez IDEA Factory and named for Stanley R. Zupnik ’59, it will house elements of the civil and environmental engineering and mechanical engineering departments, the Quantum Technology Center, and spaces for identity-based student organizations like the Black Engineers Society.

Field Hockey and Women’s Lacrosse ComplexMaryland’s powerhouse women’s field hockey and lacrosse teams will have a dramatically renovated home in October: The 17,193-square-foot complex across from the Xfinity Center, triple the size of the old one, will include locker and team rooms, office and meeting spaces, a relocated fan entrance and more.

Barry P. Gossett Basketball Performance CenterEarly-phase construction is underway on Maryland’s first dedicated practice facility for its basketball teams, with main construction beginning in December. The 44,000-square-foot center in front of the Xfinity Center will feature a dedicated practice court, training and conditioning spaces, expanded locker rooms and office space.

Graduate Student HousingDemolition has begun on the Old Leonardtown community, a cluster of aging apartment buildings tucked behind Fraternity Row, to make way for new graduate student housing. Slated to open in Fall 2026, the new development will include 796 beds at below-market rates for UMD’s graduate community.

Eppley Recreation Center PoolThe 50-meter indoor pool is back in the swim of things this fall, thanks to an extensive upgrade to its mechanical system over the summer. The work, includes new pumps, piping and filters to improve the pool’s performance and energy efficiency.

Woods HallUMD’s anthropology department has settled into renovated space in time for fall classes, after the completion of new HVAC, accessibility and safety upgrades.

Jiménez HallJiménez Hall is undergoing a full upgrade of its HVAC and safety systems. Phase 1 was completed in August, with the ground and first floors ready for fall classes. Renovations will continue on the upper floors through the fall.
